Dorothy Slater

West Australian Bridge Club's oldest member passed away in January this year. Born in Subiaco in 1915 Dorothy was the sixth of eight girls. (can you imagine the dinner table conversations!!) Dorothy and her sisters all played bridge under the watchful tutorage of their mother.

Dorothy was a State swimming champion at the age of twelve, a member of The State Surf Lifesaving Team and became a Life Member of The Cottesloe Ladies Lifesaving Club in 1941. She was also a member of The Nedlands golf Club pennant team. Another of Dorothy's talents was embroidery where she won many prizes at The Royal Show. Dorothy Hemmant married Geoffrey Slater in 1939 and had two daughters - now Susan Tham and Jane Burke. Susan also plays bridge at WABC as did Dorothy's sisters - Lucy Cecil and Ada Macdermott.

Dorothy was a long-standing member of The Village Bridge Club and at WABC - playing much of her bridge in later years with another nonagenarian Jim Black - achieving great results over many years. Dorothy’s cheerful face and friendly welcome to her table will be missed by everyone.
