Monthly Summary: October
October greeted us with sunny spring days followed by a cold wet snap - perfect for playing bridge. The Club came together at a busy bee one Sunday to clean up the blooming lupin patch to the south of the clubrooms and to do a general garden clean up.
At the AGM retiring Office Bearers and Committee Members were thanked and the new ones welcomed into their new roles. In particular Richard Basham, long time Treasurer handed over the baton to Shirley Lavarack. Kate North retired as President but is staying on as a Committee Member and is now on the Tournament Committee. Sylvia Bray was welcomed as our new President. Our Patrons Helen George and Peter Smith presented the Patrons Cup, donated by Mabs McCulloch, to Kate North - a well deserving repeat winner of this award.
A number of Club Championship events took place including the WABC Mixed Pairs Championship won by Kaiping Chen and Tomoko Nakamatsu, the WABC Open Pairs Championship won by Deana Wilson and Pim Birss and the WABC Teams Championship won by Vidond Nasta, Ann Youngs, Sue Gammon and Deana Wilson. Congratulations to the winners and all the competitors.
In late October with more flooding forecast in the Eastern States, the club came together at the annual Charity Red Point Session to raise funds for flood relief. Thank you to all who attended and especially to those who donated extra above the table money.
Andy Hung had some great wins in October. With his partner Shane Harrison he won the Open Pairs in the 2022 New Zealand National Congress. They played together in the Open Teams event at the same Congress and were runners up. Andy and his team were also winners at the 2022 Sydney Spring Nationals held later in the month. They won the final in a live screened nail biting final. Our congratulations to Andy and his fellow team mates.
