Monthly Summary: September 2024

Farewell

Unfortunately, both Terence Heptinstall and Don Allen have passed away. Both will be sorely missed.

Terence was a member at both West Coast and WABC and played regularly with his wife Hilary on most Friday and Saturday afternoons. The Funeral Service to celebrate the life of Terence Heptinstall will be held at The Church of the Resurrection, 105 Shenton Rd Swanbourne on Saturday 12 October 2024 commencing at 11.00am.

Don played mostly on Tuesday afternoons but was a stalwart of the WA bridge scene for over forty years and represented WA many times.

Competitions

Andy Hung, our club professional, had a remarkable tournament in the recent HCL International Bridge Championship in Delhi, India. The teams event was won by Andy Hung - Sartaj Hans and Matt Brown - Michael Whibley. They beat some world class teams including a very strong USA team playing with an Indian sponsor in the final. One board in the final, written up by Paul Marston in the Weekend Australian, had a very unusual pair of scores, four hearts redoubled and making at one table, and three hearts down one at the other table.

The Geraldton Congress was run last weekend and the two session Congress Pairs was won comfortably by Jodie Basham - Karen Molller from Roz Trand - Alan Harrop. In the teams, Jodie & Karen lined up with Andy Cayley - Anne-Louise Dubrawski and came second to a very experienced team of Mark Goddard-Alan Harrop-Bob-Prince-Roz Trend.

Closer to home, Jeff & Sandy Veling won the Evening Pairs Championship from Gwyneira Brahma - Stella Steer. Perhaps a weekend of practice helped as Jeff & Sandy also won the Restricted section of the Hans Rosendorff Swiss Pairs held the weekend prior in very convincing fashion.

The Mens Pairs Championship ran for the first time in several years as a combined event with Nedlands. It was a close run affair with Vinod Nasta - Tim Wright winning from David Matthews - Hamish McCracken.

The Swiss Pairs Championship finished early in the month and was won by Jonathan Free - Joann Theriault from John Finlay-Jones - Phil Jacobsen.

The BAWA Hans Rosendorff Women's Swiss Pairs was held on the last Sunday in September and saw forty pairs turn up for a very enjoyable day of bridge. The winners were Jan Blight - Wendy Driscoll from Leone Fuller - Marnie Leybourne and Pauline Collett - Cathy Hood.

There were also a lot of WABC players playing in the Territory Gold Congress that was held in Darwin this year. The Congress alternates between Darwin and Alice Springs and is great fun. A mix of Pairs & Teams events. Pencil it in.

Other

The work at the Hospice has started and redirecting the WABC sewage line will happen in October. The City of Nedlands are pushing ahead with the final part of the Norn Bidi Trail and have removed the three trees in the carpark as well as the ACROD bollards.

AGM & Voting

The AGM will be held on the 15 October and voting for the position of Secretary and Committee Members is underway. Voting closes at 1:30pm on the 15 October and a Voting Slip can be collected from the office by club members. If you can't get to the office then please contact or email the Executive Officer to make alternative arrangements.
