The second day of the WABC Winter Super Congress started with the first session of the all day Saturday Swiss Pairs in the morning and this event was joined by the President’s Pairs in the afternoon.

As usual the President’s Pairs had a number of late withdrawals and a number of walk ins who had not entered the congress. No challenge is too great for David Burn, the Chief Tournament Director, who had new movements organised in a flash. The only problem was one of the added tables had unexpectedly left the building and this was only discovered as the boards were being distributed! Oops!

In the Swiss Pairs your office manager discovered an entertaining way to score -1410 in a partscore contract. Yes, it was a minus; and yes it was a partscore, admittedly doubled into game. Four diamonds doubled was the contract. There were some discussions about whether the double, intended to be takeout, was actually penalties; oh well, it’s not the first time a pair has had that problem. Anyway, your gallant defenders did take one trick only for an earlier revoke to return said trick to declarer. Making all thirteen!
