Annual Red Point Charity Day
The 2024 WABC annual red point Charity Day & Raffle was held on Friday 10th May.
This annual fund raiser supports a smaller, perhaps lesser-known, local charity organisation and this year the charity chosen was Homelessness: We Care - Perth Western Australia. This small, not-for-profit charity is based in Perth, Western Australia.
Charity Day raised $6,903.
This money was raised through the raffle, token donations, and the afternoon bridge session. There was also a large quantity of clothing donated as well. Thank you everyone for contributing to this result as well as donating to the thirty two prizes. Several businesses including Bunnings, Taj Mahal Restaurant, and Health Body Chinese Massage also donated prizes.
Lindsey Frances from Homelessness: We care came and addressed the club players prior to the raffle being drawn.
Homelessness: We Care started out with sandwiches and home cooked meals. Over the years it has grown and now does a Christmas roast every year on the last Tuesday before Christmas. It has an ABN, is incorporated with a charity licence number and has DGR status. It is run by volunteers and doesn't receive government funding. The charity relies on community support.
The main goal is to feed people who need help with nutritious food including at least 100 grams of protein. Whenever possible Homelessness: We Care will give out care packages that keep people going until lunch time the next day. Although food alone will not cure homelessness the volunteers are sometimes the only person who has spoken to those in need all day. The charity does not work alone, there is a street doctor, social workers, street chaplains, shower trailer, clothes from Perth Homeless Support Group, Orange Sky (Laundry), hairdresser and a vet.
