Gala Open Day

AIR CONDITIOING

The four air conditioning units for the WABC playing area have been replaced with four larger capacity “state of the art” units. The room temperature has been quite pleasant the past few days but there have been a few cool and some warm periods while Martin and the Directors work out the best way to operate the new units. Thank you to Needhamair for getting the work done so quickly and without much noise as our bridge games continued on regardless.

GALA OPEN DAY

It has been a very busy few months with numerous events taking place. The Gala Open Day saw almost 100 visitors either playing or learning about the game of bridge followed by champagne and nibbles afterwards. Well done to Prue Hart, Penni Fletcher-Hughes and her intrepid husband Don, and Carla Sullivan who had almost half of the room learning about bridge. Carla’s opening slide on bridge asks “How hard is it? Now, there’s a tough question! Intermediate tables with supervision by some master players and a small but competitive 4 table duplicate session rounded out the more serious side of the afternoon.

An amusing by product of Gala Day was a dramatic rescue of two Cottesloe residents who were helping out their son with the bins when they accidentally got locked in the garage by the automatic door. With no apparent way out from inside, and no one likely to return until much later that day, it was a relief when Don, delivering fliers, heard their cries and was able to get them out.

Thank you also Jan McNab who gave Carla much needed assistance. Also to our talented cooks contributing to the afternoon tea and Ronnie for the cake.

RESTRICTED TEAMS CHAMPIONSHIP

Jodie Basham worked hard to get the Restricted WABC Teams Championship up and running, thank you Jodie and please, everyone, give some thought to joining in these club championship events, they are fun, and such an effective way of trying out your skills with a bit of excitement thrown in. Give it a go. The winners were Heather Bannerman, Tessa Mayall, Karen McLean & Christine Sabier.

MASTERS IN TEAMS OF THREE

Our popular Masters in Teams of 3 was another hit, with Masters giving generously of their time and advice. Lynne Milne's team of Gabrielle Bastow, Shane Brown and Tony McKinnon won the day. Many thanks to Bruce Fraser for rounding up the masters. Dave Munro may not have been on the winner’s list but he certainly had the best shirt.

FRIENDS OF THE ROYAL FLYING DOCTOR SERVICE

The Friends of the Royal Flying Doctor Service held a games day fund raiser at WABC on Sunday 14 April with 132 visitors playing bridge or mahjong.
