Monthly Summary: March 2024
The average mean maximum temperature in the Perth metropolitan area in March was 30.2 and the Club was operating without air-conditioning. The playing conditions were less than satisfactory. However, we would like to thank the Club Members for their patience and tenacity, still coming along to play through the heat wave.
WABC Super Novice, Novice and Restricted Congresses
The three categories were combined into one all day congress with a Super Novice & Novice field of 24 pairs and a Restricted field of 18 pairs.
A very pleasant Sunday’s bridge and, looking at the results, the Super Novice players didn’t seem to have too much trouble with the slightly more experienced Novice players.
The winners in the Super Novice Section were Rory Hanlon & Lyn Roberts from Mike Bennet & Derek Dorward with Megan Jefferies & Juliana Westlake third.
In the Novice Section, Maurice Ford & Mark Glaser won from Penni Fletcher-Hughes & Leane Lapworth.
The winners in the Restricted Section were John Finlay-Jones & Prue Hart from Eamon McCabe & Joanne Theriault with Diedre Doepel & Jennifer Sharpe third.
The Best WABC pair not already winning a prize were Karen McLean & Christine Sabier.
Aspire2Wealth Information Session
In mid March, Malcolm Davis from Aspire2 Wealth presented an informative and entertaining outline of what to look out for in the areas of aged care, the importance and pitfalls of making a will, philanthropy, and the challenge of keeping ourselves informed of recent government changes in these areas.
Malcolm brought his team of advisers along, some of whom we’ve met at our “Fun” events. This presentation was well received by those who attended, and Malcolm and his team were there to answer the many queries relating to the complex world of finance we face in retirement.
New Members Party
The New Members Party held in late March, was an opportunity for our newer and mostly inexperienced members to meet and play with some of the clubs more experienced players. It was a very enjoyable afternoon. It began with a glass of champagne to start the afternoon and settle any nerves, followed by a draw for partners and then a short session of bridge. There were several players venturing out from supervised and everyone coped well and seemed to be having a great time.
Carla Sullivan donated a copy of Paul Marston’s book Principles of Card Play as a lucky door prize to the player ending up in the East seat at table 8. This was won by Meredith Wilkinson
There was more champagne and a wonderful selection of nibbles after play. Many thanks to the committee members who brought the food and to Sylvia who spent the afternoon in the kitchen.
Women's Pairs Championship
The Women’s Pairs Championship was won by Linda Coli & Virginia Seward who came first in both weeks, a very solid performance.
