Australian National Congress 2023

The big news of the month is of course the 84th Australian Bridge Federation National Championships that was held in Perth from 8th to 20th July.

The Interstate teams saw a number of our club members representing Western Australia. In the Open Team: Pim Birss, Deana Wilson & Martin Doran (NPC). In the Womens Team: Gwyneira Brahma, Stella Steer & Kate Smith (NPC). In the Seniors: John Beddow & Geoff Yeo. Well done to all.

The Open Team were running third for most of the tournament and had a chance to make the final going into the last match but it was not to be as a big loss to the ACT saw the ACT leapfrogging both WA and VIC to sneak into second place. South Australia had a remarkably successful tournament winning the Open, Womens and Seniors events, as well as being runners up in the Youth.

There were lots of Congress side events including two sponsored by WABC. Pairs with at least one WABC player who did well included the following: The Monday WABC Pairs was won by Veronica Ntoumenopoulos & Angie Somic. In the Thursday WABC Pairs Sylvia Bray & Ian Ferguson were third. Joscelyn Charters & Sandra Hoffman won the Nedlands Pairs. In the Best 3 of 4 Pairs, Don Allen & David Matthews; Angeline Christie & Jeanette Abrams; Dave Munro & Cassie Morin; and Jan Blight & Wendy Driscoll all won a session. In the South Perth Pairs, John Finlay-Jones & Phil Jacobsen came third. The Mandurah Pairs was won by John Beddow & Egmont Melton. The Joondalup Pairs was won by Ping Robson & Mei Zhao.

On Saturday, the two session Volunteer Power Stralow Swiss Pairs was won by Jane Henderson &Tracey Kudelka.

Well done to everyone who played at the ANC; lots of club members made the trek into the city to play in the Congress Events and we look forward to seeing you all back at WABC.
